Tutorials (Week 2)

It is my second week in my Introduction to Game Development and my first Game Snack. Anthropy and Clark’s  Chapter 1 - Language, speaks on unnecessary tutorials and although I understood their point I didn't agree with it entirely. While yes a good experienced gamer would know to move to the right to start the game, and even an inexperienced gamer could figure it out since most games won't let you go backwards without hitting an imaginary wall, I would like to argue the point that I am not always very smart. While yes I do take game design courses and yes I do study the mechanics of games, I don’t play a lot of games myself and tend to forget the basic mechanics. No, I'm not saying I need a giant arrow to tell me where to go, but if I'm being chased by a goomba I'd like a little tutorial on how to jump instead of smashing every button and dying repeatedly until I guess correctly. Tutorials are also helpful for newcomers to feel a little more comfortable playing with friends. When my brothers and I would play games together I would be ridiculed if I didn't immediately understand a game's mechanics, however if there's a tutorial then I can go through it and feel a little more confident playing. If tutorials are that annoying to some then adding a skip button should fix it.
